Blip.me fits nicely in the area between text messaging and an actual phone call. Blip.me allows you to send voice notes to any of your contacts, semi-instantaneously. If you have never used a push-to-talk app, all you do is press and hold the “Hold & Speak” button to record the message you wish to save or send. While a comparison to a “walkie-talkie” style of communication is pretty easy and accurate, this is not the same instant conversation. Blip.me first records your message then sends it to your recipient who then can choose to listen then, later, or save it. That can be a very convenient feature if you cannot listen or reply immediately.

There are multiple ways to listen to a message. You can send text based messages if you are already talking with a friend and don’t want to switch apps. The main concept of the app is being able to record voice messages, and there are multiple ways to receive them. If you are actively messaging back and forth with a single person, you can choose to automatically play the messages through the speakers (like speaker phone). If you are in a public place or just want to listen via the normal phone call speakers, you can select that option as well. If you are engaging in multiple conversations, a notification will pop up letting you know that another person has sent you a message, which you can then listen to at your convenience. If your phone is on mute, you will not be able to hear your received messages, so make sure you have the volume on!

This is a screen cap of the “Hold & Speak” button, which you press and hold to record a message. The left image shows the view you have while sending messages with a single person. The right image is what you see when you are actively recording a message.

Good:

  • Send and receive texts and voice messages (via data connection)
  • Messages are more personal than a text message while being less time consuming than a phone call
  • Easy to set up and message any of your contacts.
  • Many ways to listen to received messages.
  • Works with both iPhone and Android users.

Bad:

  • Not enough options to customize notifications.
  • No way to abort a message while it is sending.

Conclusion: The Blip.me Android app is an easy and versatile way to message your contacts. If you want to change up the way you contact your friends, this is the way to go.
