Comic book fans now have a better way to read comics on their Android devices. Comics for Android is a new app from Comixology, a digital comic book seller. Comixology has over 40,000 comic titles available for android tablets and smartphones. This free app has been redesigned and greatly simplifies and improves the process for buying and reading comics digitally. A key, much desired feature called Fit-To-Width mode, which makes viewing the comics and their impressive artwork much better. The Comixology website still has some features and exclusive older comics that are not available on the app.
Marvel and DC have their own company digital comic marketplaces, but if you are a comic book fan without a strong particular allegiance, then Comics for Android is the best choice. Of course Marvel and DC produced comic series are heavily represented, but Comics for Android has a broad array of comics published by other companies such as IDW, Antarctic Press, Dynamite, Image, Archie, Top Shelf, Valiant, Devil’s Due and more. Since Dark Horse Comics is creating it’s own digital marketplace app, is not on the Comics for Android’s marketplace. The Dark Horse app is far less expansive or quality than this app.
Opening the home screen shows the Featured section, which is where you can view the most popular and recent title and has ne releases and sales. Purchasing comic books is done on the Comixology website. You can buy comics the same day the comics are released to physical stores. You can search comics by story arcs, creators, series, pushisher, artists, ratings or more. Comics for Android has an easy navigation process.
Once you select a comic, you can view creator credits, pricing, rating, synopsis, and even view select pages. Once you chose a comic and purchase it, the comic is downloaded immediately. When using wifi, the process takes seconds. Some comics are as low as 99c, but many are the same price as a physical copy, $3.99. You can select the Buy In Print option, which shows local stores where you could purchase that comic. Comixology finds these stores based on your entered zip code. You can subscribe to a certain comic on the Comixology website.
Comixology has a patented Guided View option, which allows you to read a comic panel to panel full screen, or you can view the comic page by page in a more traditional manner. When using a small screen device, the Guided View option is very valuable. Dark Horse Comic’s tried to adapt a similar feature with their Panel Zoom, but Comixology’s Guided View is far more effective. Certain comic books adapt better to Guided View than others. Comixology’s Comics for Android now has HD resolution and Fit to Width. Previously, other android apps did not have the Fit to Width, which allows the screen to switch to a horizontal full screen.
Good:
- Comic for Android has many unique to Android features that greatly enhance reading experience
- A large marketplace is great for readers who do not only read DC or only Marvel comics
- The competition is not very strong for Comics for Android
- Fit-To-Width, HD support, and Guided View are all exclusive features
Bad:
- The marketplace has some noticeable gaps in titles
- Smaller screens on Android Devices
- Many electronically purchased comics are the same price as their paper counterparts
Conclusion: Comics for Android is the best electronic comic book app. From purchasing and searching for comics, to the actual reading and storage, Comics for Android by Comixology has no true equal on the market.
